DTF Image Requirements: Frequently Asked Questions

What resolution do I need for DTF printing?

For crisp, professional DTF transfers, your artwork should be 300 DPI at the final print size. Files between 150 and 300 DPI will still print, but fine details and small text may look slightly soft. Anything below 150 DPI will appear pixelated and we don't recommend printing it.

How do I know if my image is 300 DPI?

DPI depends on print size, not just the file. Divide your image width in pixels by the width in inches you want to print. For example, a 3300 pixel wide image printed at 11 inches wide equals 300 DPI, but the same file printed at 22 inches wide drops to 150 DPI. Our free checker above does this math for you instantly.

Should I use PNG or JPG for DTF transfers?

Always use PNG with a transparent background. JPG files cannot store transparency, so your design would print with a solid rectangle behind it. PNG also uses lossless compression, which keeps edges and text sharp.

Why does my design need a transparent background?

DTF printers print exactly what is in your file. If your artwork sits on a white or colored background, that background gets printed and pressed onto the garment as part of the transfer. A transparent background means only your design transfers, with clean edges.

Can I use vector files like AI, SVG or PDF?

Vector files are great source material because they scale to any size without losing quality. Export them as a PNG at 300 DPI at your intended print size with a transparent background, then upload the PNG to our Gang Sheet Builder.

What is the maximum print size for a DTF transfer?

Our gang sheets are 22 inches wide, so a single design can be up to 22 inches across. The maximum size your specific file supports depends on its resolution: divide its pixel width by 300 for best quality, or by 150 for the minimum acceptable quality. The checker above shows both numbers for your file.

How do I upscale a low resolution image for DTF?

If your file falls short, the best fix is going back to the original source file or a vector version. AI upscaling tools can help with photos and complex artwork, but they cannot recover sharp edges on text and logos. When possible, recreate logos as vectors and export a fresh high resolution PNG.

Is my image uploaded to your servers when I use this checker?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, stored or sent anywhere. When you are ready to print, you upload your design directly to the Gang Sheet Builder.
